This is a resin detail set consisting of a pair of Blue Water missiles, intended for use on the new Airfix TSR.2. The
parts are molded in a light yellow resin. There are a total of 22 parts - 20 for the two missiles and two for the wing pylons.
No instruction sheet or decals are included.
The castings are topnotch throughout. The bodies have
absolutely no cast lines. Panel lines are nicely engraved.
There are a few minor pinholes in the body parts. The fins
have just a little bit of flash that is easily trimmed and
sanded. They are perfect with exquisitely thin leading and
trailing edges.
Construction is straightforward. There are eight fins to be
added to each body. The narrow, pointed fins are placed in
the holes closest to the nose. Make sure the long edge
faces towards the nose of the missile. The broader fins go
around the exhaust nozzle with the sloped edge also facing
towards the front of the missile. I opened up the holes
slightly to get a good fit with the locating pins. Since I was
not mounting my missile on an aircraft, I left off the small
aerodynamic tailpiece and I filled in the two holes in the
body intended for the wing pylon. I opened up the exhaust
nozzle.
As for painting, almost anything reasonable will work,
since the Blue Water missile never made it to production
or operational status. The only pictures I could find of it
were black and white and showed a very glossy missile
mounted on a very glossy army truck/erector/launcher -
both probably a dark army green.
I chose to simulate what the missile might have looked
like if it had entered RAF service. At this time in history,
the RAF was painting its missiles overall white with
minimal markings.
A coat of Testors light grey was applied which revealed
some pinholes near the missile's nose. These were filled
and sanded. Another coat of light grey was applied and
when dry it was covered with two coats of Krylon gloss
white. Final painting consisted of three coats of Testors gloss insignia white. The bland overall
white was too ordinary looking, so I sprayed the nose Testors gloss black and added a black band
to the mid-section.
Conclusion
For those wanting to build something different, or those wanting to dress up their TSR.2, this set is
an excellent product and well worth the price.
